Niños Impact: Diego

Diego, now 21 years old, fondly reminisces about his time as a former participant at Domingo Savio. Joining the club at the age of four was a result of his mother seeking a relaxed environment for them. Domingo Savio became the ideal place for Diego and his older brother, who was nine at the time, to spend their days while their mother worked, thanks to a friend’s recommendation.

Reflecting on the most gratifying aspect of his participation, Diego values the overall experience, the people he met, and the various workshops that not only expanded his knowledge but also improved his technical abilities. Looking back, he acknowledges the positive impact the club had on his personal growth.

Diego, with a hint of nostalgia, mentions missing the joy of playing games, a vibrant part of the club’s activities. Despite no longer being in contact with other former participants due to the absence of social media during his time, he notes that chance encounters are always warmly greeted.

He provides a glimpse into a typical day at Domingo Savio, which involved going to school, followed by club activities. The schedule included lunch, educational reinforcement, and engaging workshops in activities like pastry, music, drawing, and dance. Fridays were dedicated to physical activities and play.

When asked about foreign volunteers, Diego indicates that while he hasn’t interacted much with them, there have been new tutors and teachers in each cycle.

Diego reveals his favorite workshop was painting, despite the inevitable mess.

He believes Domingo Savio played a significant role in molding his future, providing support in his education, helping him avoid negative influences, and instilling essential values.

Diego, now a technical aeronautic professional, credits Domingo Savio for influencing his career path. His advice to current students is to value the experience, make friends, and enjoy the workshops and games.

Expressing interest in joining an alumni network, Diego believes it would be intriguing and sees potential in organizing reunions.

He fondly recalls the game sessions facilitated by Tío Jorge, acknowledging how these experiences, despite moments of frustration, contributed to his current personality.

In one word, Diego describes Domingo Savio as a “family,” emphasizing the familial atmosphere and care that set it apart from other after-school programs or daycares. The distinct element lies in the warmth and compassion, where Diego recalls moments of receiving not just emotional support but also essentials like clothing and food when resources were limited.
