Community Impact: Eliana and Bianca

Eliana

Eliana, a member of the Domingo Savio seniors’ group, expresses the joy she finds in being part of the foundation. Feeling lonely at home, she recalls the day Tía Olguita noticed her troubles. When Eliana shared her feelings, Tía Olguita reassured her, promising she wouldn’t be alone anymore. Eliana appreciates the warm welcome and the ability to converse and ask questions at the foundation, which she finds better than being at home.

Eliana enjoys the movies they play for them and the physical exercises sessions they have. She appreciates how the young lady is accommodating to older participants who may find it challenging to stand and move freely during these exercises.

She highlights the fondness for the foundation’s offerings, including tea, pound cake, coffee and even juice if they ask for it. Expressing gratitude, Eliana mentions the thoughtful gifts given on holidays like Easter and Independence Day. She marvels at the unexpected and generous provisions, including sandwiches for the journey home.

Eliana emphasizes the familial atmosphere, where everyone supports and laughs together, making it a cheerful environment despite their age. She shared her positive interactions with volunteers, even when language barriers exist.

Observing Domingo Savio’s impact on children, Eliana notes the foundation’s role in teaching them to dance and protecting and caring for them. The foundation’s stringent security measures ensure a safe space for children, with special allowances made for occasional visits.

Eliana expresses happiness for the personal attention she receives, with Tía Magaly even providing warm clothing when she feels cold. She emphasizes the rarity of such gestures, making Domingo Savio a unique and caring community.

Reflecting on life without Domingo Savio, Eliana contrasts it with the solitude she witnesses in her grandchildren’s lives, where the lack of communication is disheartening.

She is very grateful for the sense of belonging that Domingo Savio provides for her.

Bianca

Bianca, a member of the elderly group at the foundation, finds immense joy in being a part of Domingo Savio. Her daughter, who grew up within the foundation, is now attending university—a testament to the positive impact the organization has had on their lives.

Bianca shares that her prolonged involvement with the foundation stems from her love for spending time with both the elderly and children. The various workshops, such as cooking, wood painting, weaving, and entertaining dances, have not only enriched her life but also provided valuable skills that she employs to earn a living.

Workshop activities play a vital role in Bianca’s daily life, providing a mental break and stress relief. The painting workshops, such as the recent one involving wooden boxes and napkin decoupage, showcase the creativity of the members. The finished creations are displayed at an exhibition, and each participant gets to take home their unique piece.

Describing a typical day at the foundation, Bianca highlights the sequence of activities, from dancing to workshops, enjoying afternoon tea, and bidding farewell. She mentions diverse activities, like drawing and stress-relief exercises, contributing to a dynamic and fulfilling routine.

The aspects she cherishes most about the foundation are the dedication of the staff, their kindness, and the sense of community they foster. Bianca appreciates the personal connections she forms, emphasizing that the foundation erases loneliness, leaving her with happiness to carry home.

Interactions between the elderly group and the children are characterized by warm goodbyes, creating a harmonious atmosphere. With 25 members, the group feels like a tight-knit community where support and companionship flourish.

Observing the impact of Domingo Savio on children, Bianca believes that the foundation helps them by providing love and respect. The organized approach to various activities, including sports, cooking, dance, folklore, and math workshops at INACAP, equips the children with valuable life skills.

Bianca warmly recalls interactions with volunteers, including delightful moments like a senior dancing the cueca with a volunteer. To prospective volunteers, she suggests embracing the fantastic experience of being at the foundation, emphasizing the enormous sense of peace and love that radiates within.
